A sample line until you transcribe something. How the Final Cut and Resolve download will read. Type and timing are what the file carries; your editor decides where it sits.

A short slide and fade as each line appears, written into both FCPXML exports. Final Cut plays it as timed; DaVinci Resolve reads the same file, so check the first few lines there before committing to a long edit.

CaptionsThis at a glance

CaptionsThis is a web app that turns audio and video into subtitle files for video editors. It transcribes with Whisper large-v3, aligns every word to the audio so each one has its own timestamp, and exports SRT, WebVTT (.vtt), SubViewer (.sbv), FCPXML and Premiere Pro marker XML at your timeline's exact frame rate. A free account includes 15 minutes a month.

Exports
SRT, WebVTT (.vtt), SubViewer (.sbv), FCPXML and Premiere Pro marker XML. Four optional styled exports for Final Cut: a karaoke-style FCPXML that highlights each word as it is spoken, a word-reveal FCPXML that builds the line up word by word, a typewriter FCPXML that types each line out in time with the speech, and a word-build FCPXML that brings each word in with Final Cut's own fade, blur, slide or scale animations.
Works with
Final Cut Pro (FCPXML), DaVinci Resolve (FCPXML, imported as Text+ titles, or SRT), Premiere Pro (SRT captions, or marker XML), CapCut (SRT), and YouTube (SRT, WebVTT or SBV).
Frame rates
23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60 fps. Every caption starts and ends on a whole frame.
Timing
Word-level, from forced alignment, for languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hindi and Arabic. Other languages Whisper recognises are transcribed with Whisper's own timing, and the editor tells you when that happens.
Translation
Into English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Russian, keeping the original timing. Existing SRT, VTT and SBV files can be translated too.
Uploads
M4A, MP3, WAV, OGG, WEBM, MP4 and MOV, up to 25 MB. Video is converted to audio in your browser first, so about 50 minutes of video fits.
Price
Free: 15 minutes and 5 transcriptions a month with an account. Credit packs from $5 for 100 minutes, or plans from $16.89 a month for 800 minutes. Bought minutes never expire.
Privacy
Audio is transcribed and not stored. Your transcript and edits stay in your own browser.

Turn audio and video into subtitles you can actually edit

CaptionsThis transcribes your recording and gives every word its own timestamp, so the subtitles you get back are editable rather than fixed. Change where a line breaks, split a long cue in two, or retype a misheard name, and the timing follows, because it is anchored to the audio and not interpolated from character counts.

Export SRT when the captions need to travel: YouTube, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, a client. Export FCPXML when you are finishing in Final Cut Pro and want titles that land on the right frame with your styling already applied.

How it works

  1. Drop in your fileAudio or video: M4A, MP3, WAV, OGG, WEBM, MP4 and MOV. Video is decoded to audio in your browser, so a large file never has to upload in full.
  2. Transcription and alignmentWhisper produces the transcript, then a forced-alignment pass locates every individual word in the waveform, so each one carries its own timestamp.
  3. Edit the linesSet words per line or break on natural sentences. Split, join, and retype lines: the timing stays correct because every word is anchored.
  4. ExportDownload SRT, WebVTT (.vtt), SubViewer (.sbv), FCPXML and Premiere Pro marker XML, all landing on the same frames at your project's frame rate. SRT works almost anywhere; FCPXML goes to Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve; the marker XML is for Premiere Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Is CaptionsThis free?

Yes, to start. You can transcribe a clip up to 5 minutes without an account to see the timing for yourself. A free account unlocks downloads and gives you 15 minutes and 5 transcriptions every month. Past that, credit packs are one-time purchases from $5, and plans start at $16.89 a month. Minutes you buy, from a pack or a plan, never expire.

Which subtitle formats can I export?

SRT, WebVTT (.vtt), SubViewer (.sbv), FCPXML and Premiere Pro marker XML, plus four optional styled exports: a karaoke-style FCPXML that highlights each word as it is spoken, a word-reveal FCPXML that reveals the line one word at a time as it is said, a typewriter FCPXML that types each line out on Final Cut's own Typewriter title, and a word-build FCPXML that animates each word in on Final Cut's own Build In/Out titles. Every export is built from the same frame-snapped timing, so the formats agree with one another.

Does it work with Premiere Pro?

Yes. Import the SRT as a caption track, or use the Premiere Pro marker XML, which places one sequence marker per caption. Premiere cannot open FCPXML, which is Final Cut Pro's format, so the marker export uses the older XML that Premiere does read.

Does it work with DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. Import the FCPXML and each caption arrives as a Text+ title you can style, or import the SRT onto a subtitle track.

Does it work with Final Cut Pro?

Yes. The FCPXML export brings every caption in as an editable title at your project's frame rate (23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60 fps), with per-word styling kept.

What file formats can I upload?

M4A, MP3, WAV, OGG, WEBM, MP4 and MOV. Video files are converted to audio in your browser before upload, so a large video does not need to be uploaded in full.

How accurate is the timing?

Transcription runs on Whisper large-v3, then a separate forced-alignment pass locates each individual word in the audio. Every word has its own start and end time, so you can split or join subtitle lines without the second half drifting out of sync. Forced alignment exists for many but not all languages; for the others the editor tells you it is using Whisper's own, looser timing.

Can I translate the subtitles?

Yes. Pick an output language (English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Russian) and the transcript is translated segment by segment, keeping the original timing, then exported in any of the formats. To translate a subtitle file you already have, use the subtitle translator: a free account includes 3 translations.

Is there a file size limit?

Uploads are capped at 25 MB. Video is converted to compressed audio in your browser first, which fits about 50 minutes of video. An audio file counts at its own size.

Do I need an account to download the subtitles?

Yes. Transcribing a short clip works without one, but downloading the subtitle file needs a free account. Signing in also gives you 15 minutes and 5 transcriptions each month.

Do you keep my audio?

No. Audio is sent to the transcription service, processed, and returned as text. It is not stored. Your edits are saved only in your own browser's local storage.
